Open pollinated means that you can harvest the seeds from the vegetables you grow this year and then replant them. You can repeat this process year after year….forever. With today's hybrid or genetically engineered seed, you cannot replant the harvested seed and get the same quality vegetable as the seed came from.

You can use Forever Garden™ immediately for planting or you can store Forever Garden™ as the ultimate food storage.
Storage and Use:

Although the seed is ready for immediate use, our garden seeds can be stored for up to 5 years at 65-70 degrees. Each additional 6 degree drop in temperature will double the storable like of your seed. Store in a cool, dry, dark location.
We recommend using or replacing the seeds in this container every 5 years.

To maximize your harvest we have included instructions for garden preparation, planting, watering, fertilizing, and harvesting the vegetables and Collecting and storing their respective seeds.

 

1. Where to Plant: Gardens need full sun, or the sunniest area you can provide them. Remember to plant tall plants such as corn, or trellised plants on the northern part of your garden as to not shade other areas of your garden.

2. Soil: Soil needs to be loose, and well drained for best results. Every year you should add some type of organic material to the garden. Up to 2-4” if available, be it manure, leaves, grass clippings, saw dust, straw, garden compost, or even the more expensive peat moss. These should be tilled into the garden in the late Fall or early Spring. Nitrogen fertilizer should be added to avoid nitrogen deficiency. Manure and composted materials need less nitrogen, so follow directions on package, example 1lb of 21-0-0 per inch of organic material, per 100 sq/ft of garden, should be sufficient. Soil testing is also recommended in any unproven garden area.

3. Crop Rotation: Care should be taken to avoid planting the same types of vegetables in the same location year after year, by rotating crop locations you can avoid many of the insects and soil born diseases in your garden.

4. Weeds: Keep weeds down by cultivation, pulling the weeds, or by using fabrics and mulches. Weeds rob your garden of water, nutrients, sun light, and space. All measures should be taken to reduce the weed population in your garden.

5. Harvested seed: Once dried, the seed should be stored in a cool, dry, dark location. If stored in sealed containers the refrigerator or freezer will extend the usable life of the seeds for many years.

Bush Beans, Top Crop: 1950 All-America Selections Winner! Bush type plant produces high yields of quite flavorful straight 5 ½" long beans. Developed by the USDA and is very flavorful and disease resistance. The bean is stringless and perfect for canning and freezing.

Water: Light water to achieve moist soils-do not over water

Fertilizer: Use RootBlast or equivalent, with a slow release fertilizer when transplanting outdoors. Periodically apply Miracle Gro or other garden fertilizer.

Harvesting: Pick when 5”- 5½” long, without damaging existing blossoms. Pick young, and when plant is dry.

Seed harvesting: Allow pods to dry completely and remove seeds.

Cabbage, Copenhagen Market: High quality cabbage to be eaten fresh or cooked. Plant produces good yields of 3 lb cabbage. It is very flavorful and tender. Heads rarely burst.

Water: Water Regularly, do no over water

Fertilizer: Use RootBlast, and Slow Release Fertilizer when transplanting outdoors. Apply Miracle Gro or other garden fertilizer twice a month.

Harvesting: Harvest when heads are firm. Leaving lowest leafs, to allow 2nd head to form.

Seed harvesting: Produces seed on 2nd year protect root from freezing by burying in sand or leave in ground with thick mulch. Seed will form during summer, leave seed head on stalk until partially dry, then collect and allow to finish drying inside.

Carrot, Scarlet Nantes: Plant produces flavorful 8" long x 1 ½" wide dark orange coreless carrots. This variety holds it’s color during cooking and is great for the home garden.

Water: Light but regular waterings.

Fertilizer: Monthly Miracle Grow or other Garden Fertilizer.

Harvesting: Pull when 1½" inches in width or sooner for finer carrots, or to thin areas.

Seed harvesting: Produces seed on 2nd year. Protect root from freezing by burying in sand or leave in ground with thick mulch. Seed will form during summer, leave seed head on stalk until partially dry, then collect and allow to finish drying inside.

Corn, Golden Bantam 8: Sweet, hardy corn with 5-7” ears, great for cooking, freezing, or canning.

Water: After germination, occasional deep watering, as temperature dictates.

Harvesting: Kernel should be fully formed, tender, and milky white.

Cucumber, Boston Pickler: Produces high yields of 4”-6” long pickling cucumbers. This is a high quality slicing Cuc, but one of the best for pickling and storage. Great for salads, and gourmet dishes. It has a crisp strong flavor.

Water: ½” per week, keep soil moist especially when hot.

Fertilizer: RootBlast or equivalent, with a slow release fertilizer when transplanting outdoors. Periodically apply Miracle Gro or other garden fertilizer.

Harvesting: Harvest when plant reaches 9” max. to avoid bitter fruit. Daily harvest will encourage new growth.

Cantaloupe, Imperial: 1935 All-America Selections Winner! Plant produces high yields of cantaloupes. They are sweet and have a great orange flesh. Excellent for home gardens and it stores well.

Water: 1” per week, water well in hot climate

Fertilizer: RootBlast or equivalent, with a slow release fertilizer when transplanting outdoors. Periodically apply Miracle Gro or other garden fertilizer.

Harvesting: Protect ripe fruit from damp ground with plastic or wood. Cut cleanly to protect vine.

Onion, Red Creole: Plant produces beautiful 4" wide, red onions. It has a mild sweet flavor and is an excellent slicing variety.

Watering: Keep plants constantly moist but avoid water logging. Water heavier in hot months and dry spells.

Fertilizing: Use RootBlast, and Slow Release Fertilizer when transplanting outdoors. Apply Miracle Gro or other garden fertilizer twice a month.

Harvesting: For scallions, use scissors to cut tops at any time. For onions, allow tops to dry completely, remove bulb and let dry on ground for 2-4 days.

Peas, Lincoln: Plant produces heavy yields of flavorful peas. Pod has approximately 9 peas. This high quality pea is an excellent freezer variety and is heat tolerant.

Watering: Peas require consistently moist ground, extra water in extremely hot and dry times.

Fertilizing: RootBlast or equivalent, with a slow release fertilizer when transplanting outdoors. Periodically apply Miracle Gro or other garden fertilizer.

Harvesting: Harvest when pods are fully round, and pick regularly to promote new growth.

Green Pepper, California Wonder TRM: Plant produces nice yields of 4-5” dark glossy green thick walled sweet bell peppers. Peppers turn from green to red when mature. Perfect for salads, stuffing, cooking, and is an excellent freezer pepper.

Watering: Soak ground well, especially during hot and dry times.

Fertilizing: Use RootBlast, and Slow Release Fertilizer when transplanting outdoors. Apply Miracle Gro or other garden fertilizer twice a month.

Harvesting: Harvest when fully mature using scissors to reduce damage to plant, picking will encourage new growth.

Romaine, Paris Island Coos: Plant produces flavorful dark green heads. Leaves are loosely folded on heads. This is an excellent Romaine for salads, garnishes and exceptional for Caesar salads.

Watering: Keep plants constantly moist but avoid water logging. Water heavier in hot months and dry spells. Water only in the mornings and not directly on the leaves.

Fertilizing: RootBlast or equivalent, with a slow release fertilizer when transplanting outdoors. Periodically apply Miracle Gro or other garden fertilizer.

Harvesting: You may pick outer leaves or entire head by cutting 1” above the ground, a new head may grow.

Seed Harvesting: Allow desired heads to form a seed stalk, when the flower has lost its bloom and is drying, remove flower and allow to dry completely. Seeds can be separated from flower by rubbing between your fingers.

Squash, Waltham Butternut: 1970 All-America Selections Winner! Produces high yields of 9" long tan squash. The squash has bright orange flesh and is very sweet. Well suited for home gardens and market growers. This is a great winter squash variety.

Watering: Water well but do not over water.

Harvesting: First blossoms often do not produce fruit, no worries. Harvest when fruit is 9-12” before 1st frost.

Tomatoes, Floradade: Plant produces good yields of 7 oz red tomatoes. Tomatoes are very flavorful and firm. Excellent for Southern regions. Suitable for home garden and market growers.

Zucchini, Black Beauty: 1957 All-America Selections Winner. Bush type plant produces high yields of dark green zucchini squash. Best when harvested when squash is 8" long. This is a great summer squash variety. Bush type plant is suitable for smaller gardens. Blossoms are edible and delicious.

Watering: Keep plants constantly moist but avoid water logging. Water heavier in hot months and dry spells.

Harvesting: Protect ripe zucchini squash from wet ground by placing them on wood or equal. Cut zucchini carefully from plants to prevent damaging the vines.

Beets, Detroit Dark Red: A very old heirloom variety, from as early as the late 19th century, this is the “Standard for Beets”, a tender, sweet and very nutrious plant, well suited to Utah and great for the home gardener.

Watering: Soak seeds before planting, keep moist but do not over water, and heavier in hot times.

Fertilizing: Use RootBlast, and Slow Release Fertilizer when transplanting outdoors. Apply Miracle Grow or other garden fertilizer twice a month.

Harvesting: Harvest 3”-4” plants for best flavor and encouragement of other plants to continue to grow. Greeen (tops) may be harvested for salads.

Seed Harvesting: Late in the season after flowers are drying, cut 4' tall tops just above the root when majority flowering clusters have turned brown. Tops can be stored in cool, dry location for 2-3 weeks to encourage further seed ripening. PROCESS: Small quantities of seed can be stripped by hand as seed matures. Large numbers of tops can be put into a cloth bag & stomped or pounded. Chaff can be winnowed.
